Plateau LG polls: why we appealed PLASIEC’s decision to exclude us – PDP

The main opposition party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Plateau state, has vowed to appeal a state superior court ruling that prohibits the party from participating in the upcoming local government elections in the state.

The PDP said it was optimistic that the higher courts will uphold the inalienable right of disenfranchised voters in the state.

Adding that there were so many contradictions and problems of summer breaks in the trial.

Speaking through their attorney, Edward Pwajok (SAN), the party said: “Let’s say it loud and clear that we are going to file an appeal against the sentence.

“All the issues that were resolved by the Court, I must say that we are unhappy, and because we respect the law, we will go to the Court of Appeals, and we are optimistic that the Court will reverse the decisions,” he said. .

“Because, just listening to the trial, there are so many contradictions, there were problems of summersaulting here and there,” he said.

“We congratulate the judge for the work he has done, but we say it because we feel that it was not the correct sentence that was given, so we go to the Court of Appeals.

“That is why we call on the members of the PDP to be law-abiding, peaceful and optimistic; because thank God that the constitution has given them the right to appeal, “he explained.

Edward further said, “Let me tell you, one of the reasons some of us are not happy is that; PLASIEC and APC will do a futile exercise, but the problem is that it will be at the expense of the people of Plateau, since the state is very poor.

“Where would the state with scarce resources bother in a sham election?” He asked.

According to him, “it is undemocratic not to allow the electorate the freedom to choose the people who will represent them as their advisers and presidents.

“Now that Nigeria is a democracy, we are very optimistic that the higher courts will uphold the inalienable right of Plateau voters.

Nigeria’s leading advocate further stated that “what will happen on October 9, 2021, let me say it loud and clear, will only be a sham, a bogus exercise, but unfortunately at enormous public cost.

“So APC, you shouldn’t laugh, you should prepare to face the people of Plateau.

“They must account for their embezzlement, bad government, at the right time,” he emphasized.

NEWSLODGE recalls that a Superior Court of the State in Jos, had dismissed on Wednesday a lawsuit filed by the main opposition PDP, challenging the decision of the Independent Electoral Commission of the State of Plateau (PLASIEC) that had excluded the party from participating in the 9 October scheduled. , 2021, local government council surveys.

Judge Ishaku Kunda, who handed down a ruling on the matter, confirmed PLASIEC’s decision, saying that the PDP’s claim was unfounded because the party could not comply with the commission’s guidelines to participate in the elections.

Kunda argued that PLASIEC has the right to have rejected the PDP nomination and expression of interest forms for said election; stressing that the PDP was wrong for not having followed the instructions.

The judge saw the SP Gang ruling of November 20, 2020, which ordered the party to hold the state congress, the party proceeded to evoke sections of its constitution and dissolved the state EXCO and formed an interim committee that conducted its primaries that produced the candidates that PLASIEC refused to issue forms.

Given the circumstances, the judge held that all the steps taken by the PDP interim committee, including the holding of said primary elections, were null and void.

“All the claims presented by the plaintiff are dismissed,” the judge said.
